Guatemala – Security and Justice Sector Reform Project

The Security and Justice Sector Reform Project supported institutional strengthening and reform efforts in the Judicial Branch, Attorney General’s Office, National Civilian Police, Public Defense Institute and National Institute of Forensic Science. Among other activities, Checchi advisors helped improve the investigation and prosecution of corruption and organized crime; supported legal reform initiatives; improved efficiency and transparency in justice sector processes; implemented IT systems to modernize court administration; and supported the strengthening and expansion of specialized courts, such as 24 hour courts and courts specializing in high-profile corruption cases. The Project also completed activities to improve the investigation and prosecution of environmental crimes in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. In addition, Checchi worked with civil society organizations to help increase accountability and encourage citizen participation in security and justice sector issues.
